Union is fighting for layoffs vs having some voluntarily take themselves out of the rank and file? Makes no sense.
Start the permanent layoffs then.

I just can't understand why the union would rather have layoffs than letting people leave with cash in their pockets. I mean most that will take this have one foot out the door anyways....why not let them take a little extra cash.

Could be posturing for the next election. That, and less workers equal less union dues.
Layoffs are a part of business, just ask any auto worker. Yes, we realize there is job creation language in the contract. There also is layoff language.

If they can get enough high senior guys to take the buyout and finally make that jump to retirement(hint, hint)then that could help some of the guys that may or may not get laid off.

Such is life. Maybe the run of UPS being a safe career bet is over.
Anyway, the union wants low seniority guys gone, the ones close to retirement, they want to stay.

And they are banking on These young guys not to make a career out of this place.
